Cultural Narrative:
When James Cook’s ship, the Endeavour, was forced to beach at Whalumbaal Birri (Endeavour River) in Queensland for several weeks to make repairs, the crew had several interactions with the Guugu Yimidhirr people. The ship’s naturalist, Joseph Banks, was the first European to record an Aboriginal word for kangaroo. In the journal entry shown here, he describes a creature that bears no resemblance to any European animal he has ever seen.
